Update from CDO Scotland HERE

5th January 2021

Following the announcement by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, on Monday 4th January 2021, that England will join Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in a UK wide lockdown, the office of the Chief Dental Officer for England issued an update regarding dental practices. The statement is applicable to all dental practices in England including NHS, mixed and private practices.

The update informed the dental profession that, ‘during the latest period of national restrictions dental services are to remain open and see patients. This should be in line with the standard operating procedures and national dental infection prevention control appendix’, as seen at Coronavirus » Dental standard operating procedure: Transition to recovery (

The new variant is spreading rapidly, is more transmissible and affecting a greater proportion of young adults who are often asymptomatic. There is no evidence to suggest that it is more dangerous, but it is still imperative that the guidance is followed by carrying out remote consultations, triage and risk assessing patients before delivering any face-to-face care.

BSDHT advise members to follow the appropriate standard operating procedures, ensure they have the correct level of PPE and infection control procedures in place, and to use their own clinical judgement to deliver the most appropriate care in a safe environment for them, their patient, and any team members working with them.

As BSDHT receive any new and relevant information we will pass this straight on to members via email.

COVID-19: Guidance for the remobilisation of services within health and care settings Infection prevention and control recommendations

These are UK wide guidelines applying to all heathcare settings, superseding the previous COVID -19 Infection Prevention and Control Guidance as we move from a period of high community and hospital prevalence/incidence into a period of low prevalence/incidence with isolated outbreaks identified by each country such as Test and Trace.

Local and national prevalence and incidence data will be used to guide returning services as advised by Country specific/public health organisations.

Table 4 (Recommendations for all settings where COVID-19 transmission is sustained) has been replaced with COVID risk pathways which are based on transmission risks and testing.

The guidance places primary care dentistry in the medium risk pathway, and where AGPs are delivered in the high risk pathway.

For those caring for patients/individuals on the high or medium risk pathways, there is no change in the level of PPE needed to protect staff and in effect this means that the existing IPC guidelines for dentistry remain as presently set out in appendix 1 of the Transition to Recovery SOP

Sessional use of PPE items has been minimised and only applies to extended use of facemasks for healthcare workers.

IPC intend to publish a dental annex which will address any dental specific issues and pick up the recent work of the short life working group on ventilation in dental practices and the forthcoming SDCEP report.

FGDP(UK) & CGDent publish COVID-19 guidance synopsis

The FGDP(UK) and College of General Dentistry have published a synopsis of their guidance on the implications of COVID-19 for the safe management of general dental practice.

The new synopsis highlights key recommendations at each step of the patient journey, and is designed to be used in conjunction with the guidance document, which supports dental professionals to take a risk-based approach to providing safe care, whatever the national COVID-19 threat level.

The guidance has also now been updated with some minor amendments. Among these, prophylactic polishing of teeth has been added to the risk stratification matrix, use of face coverings by all patients and carers in non-clinical areas is now recommended (in line with government advice on preventing transmission in enclosed public spaces), and the use of shoe and head coverings is only now advised when indicated by a risk assessment. There are also some clarifications, such as around selection of PPE based on a risk assessment, and on the mopping of floors between patients following treatment carrying a high risk of exposure to aerosol.

Both the synopsis and guidance are available at and

Production of the synopsis has been supported by Sensodyne.

Yesterday evening (10 May 2020) the Prime Minister announced the conditional plan to ease restrictions. All dental guidance and Standard Operating Procedures currently in force remain unchanged. Scottish Coronovirus recruitment portal launched:

Monday 30th March 2020

BSDHT have received several enquires over the past few days from members who are employed and working in mixed NHS and Private practices, they are being informed by their practice owners that they might not be entitled to the governments furlough scheme. The issue is that the NHS England is continuing to fund practices over the coming months, despite the current inactivity of non-urgent routine dental care.

Dental team members who work in fully funded NHS practices, community or hospital can be deployed to work elsewhere in the NHS England, those employed in private dental practices can be furloughed whilst for those team members employed in mixed practices, the situation is still unclear and further guidance is required from NHS England. The advice BSDHT was given today, is that this might not apply to the devolved nations. We will keep looking for further guidance and clarity for all members.

Coronavirus is a dominant feature in all our lives both personally and professionally at the moment, BSDHT are doing all we can to support and keep members up to date with the current guidance and information that is available to us.

BSDHT are of the view that we can only follow the guidance set out by the Government and Public Health, so that we can make individual choices based on the known facts and information, which may seem quite confusing at the moment as it seems to be changing so quickly.

The guidance states that if you have a continuous dry cough and /or temperature, you should self-isolate and practices should have a notice on the door of the practice informing patients that they should not enter if they are in this situation. As for treating patients, there are some countries in Europe that have taken the decision to only see emergency patients and would consider periodontal treatment as routine therefore, most clinics have closed. We are not at this stage in the UK but this could happen.

If your practice is continuing routine treatment, you will have to decide on how you wish to treat the patient, some are using hand instruments only, whereas others are continuing as normal with high volume suction to reduce aerosols. A pre-rinse of Peroxyl for one minute is also recommended.

We understand there are potential financial issues for members, which is extremely concerning for all dental practices and team members. As a member benefit BSDHT introduced a benevolent fund in 2018, there is a small pot of money to help in times of hardship (subject to application and acceptance) but recognise that this may not be enough, individuals are encouraged to seek financial advice specific to their needs.

We have included the links so that members are in better position to make informed decisions, this is current guidance and information that is available, we will continue to update as and when appropriate.
