This presentation will introduce the audience to the different types of formal and informal scientific literature, including abstracts, papers, articles, books and newspapers, both in hard copy and online. Its aim is to provide basic information to help interpret results in such literature. It will explain how scientific papers are structured and describe the general concepts and requirements for each section of such a paper. It will consider what to look for in each section and explain the wide variety of terms that are used and their significance. Part 2, which will be presented in January 2012, will then explain critical analysis of the scientific literature.
